One of the best things about our brilliant ski area, The Portes du Soleil is the continuing investment in the infrastructure. It seems almost every year there is a new lift somewhere in the area and this year is no exception!
On the ‘Swiss side’ from the village of Morgins the slightly decrepit 40yr old three person chairlift is being replaced by a snazzy new 10 person gondola lift. I actually really liked the old one – it was the first in Switzerland to be ‘derayable,’ this is where the chairs get lifted off the wire in the stations so that they don’t come and whack you in the back of the legs. But, it was pretty beaten up and ready for the upgrade and the ride up to the glorious view point will now be super quick and it’s well worth the trip to the far side of the ski area (for us) to sit and gaze at the Dents Blanches.
In the Avoriaz sector – the Intrets lift (famous for some epic queues in peak season) has been upgraded from 4 to 6 seats and also goes higher up the mountain and so this in turn has made room for a brand new red run ‘Creux de la neige.’ This is going to increase capacity and you’ll now positively roar up the mountain at 6 metres per second. Nice.
On the Pleney on the ‘Morzine side,’ – there’s a brand new magic carpet gone in. Previously beginners had to do a hike on coming out of the gondola on the Pleney. The Nabor carpet takes away the need for this and expands the beginner area to a much better size. I love it when the carpets stop suddenly and everybody falls over…. that might just be me..
